Autobiography
Huai-su (ca. A.D. 725-785)
T'ang Dynasty
Ink on paper.
Cursive script. Handscroll.
28.3 x 75.5cm
Huai-su was born in
Changsha in Hunan
province; his surname
was Ch'ien. His style
name was Ts'ang-chen;
later he left his family
to become a monk, taking
the religious name Huai-su.
He is most noted for a
very rapid cursive style
in which all strokes are
connected. It is said
that his brush strokes are
like a startled snake
slithering through the
grass, and that they contain
the strength and fury of
the whirlwind and driving
rains.
